Delving into the world of spirituality, energy work and connecting with the elements can be daunting at first. With so many things to learn, practice and discover which often are at odds with stereotypes and old wives tales you may have heard, your head might spin! I am here to clarify any of the questions that might be circling your mind and that includes divination tools.
While Professor Trelawney may have preferred crystal balls, one of the most common tools a spiritualist may use is the Tarot. A traditional deck contains two types of cards, the Major and Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards, beginning with 0 – The Fool and ending with XXI – The World. The Minor Arcana consists of 56 cards which are divided into 4 'suits': swords, cups, wands and coins.
There are many varieties of Tarot and some truly beautiful art on the cards. To choose one is entirely up to you and which type speaks to you. There are Arthurian, Tree of Life, Aquarian, Cat People, Alchemical and the list goes on.
The importance of choosing a deck rests in the energy. Sometimes you will be drawn to certain artwork or depictions and others you will feel repelled. Choose with love in your heart and the cards will quickly become your favorite divination tool.
It is important to note that the cards do not tell you the future in the way you may have been told or thought. When performing a reading or receiving one, you will turn over a series of cards and depending on their placement, will help you in whatever quandary in which you find yourself.
For example, if you asked the cards if you should accept a new job offer you may turn over the Tower card in the placement that would be 'the basis of the issue'. This would mean endings, change and a figurative death to what you currently know. Makes sense, right? A new job would mean a change and could be a major one if it requires moving or different commute. Looking deeper into the other cards will reveal other parts to the situation that can offer you clarity in making a decision. The cards will never tell you what to do, only provide you with information about the path in which your energy is pulling you.
I have several decks I use for various types of readings. There is my everyday deck, my special occasion deck and my very first deck I have had for many years. All of them have my own energy imbibed in them which allows me to pick them up and attune them to me very quickly. Working with your decks frequently will keep the energy fresh and the cards ready to answer your questions.
One experience I had when working with the cards... I was doing readings for a woman whose husband was increasingly unfaithful. Every reading I did, the Queen of Cups would come up but in reverse. Traditionally, this card represents a nurturing, caring and compassionate woman – a good wife and loving mother – but when it is reversed can mean the opposite. It is incredible how cards shift, change and respond to our energy. Cards can sometimes take on their own meaning the more you use them because it is how they work with your energy.
